What Owlpenny is being built to do

One clear list of what's quietly charging you every month, and a heads-up before it costs you more.

Find every subscription automatically

Owlpenny scans your transaction history for repeating charges and groups them into one list, with what you pay per month and per year.

Price-increase alerts

When a recurring charge goes up, you get a notification showing the old price, the new price and what it adds up to over a year.

Free-trial reminders

A reminder before a free trial turns into a paid plan, so you decide whether to keep it before the first charge.

Auto-renewal protection

Spots recurring charges with no end date and warns you before each renewal, with guided one-click cancellation. Learn more

Hidden-fee spotting

Flags recurring fees that are easy to miss, such as monthly account maintenance fees or repeated ATM and service fees, so you can ask about them or switch.

Help canceling what you don't use

For each subscription, the fastest way to cancel: the right page, the steps, and a ready-to-send request where that's how the merchant handles it.

Planned feature

Auto-renewal protection

Many subscriptions are set to renew forever unless you stop them. Owlpenny is designed to catch those before they charge you again.

  • ✓Detects open-ended charges. Identifies recurring payments that have no end date, monthly or yearly.
  • ✓Warns you before every renewal. A reminder ahead of each renewal date, with enough time to decide (yearly renewals get extra notice).
  • ✓Guided one-click cancellation. One tap takes you straight to the merchant's cancellation page or a prefilled request, with the steps laid out.

To be clear: Owlpenny can't cancel on a merchant's side by itself. You confirm the final step with the merchant, and nothing is canceled without your OK.

How it would work

Three steps, a few minutes.

Connect your accounts

Link your checking accounts and credit cards through a trusted bank-data provider such as Plaid. Read-only: Owlpenny can see transactions but can't move money.

Review your list

Owlpenny groups repeating charges into subscriptions and fees. Confirm, rename or hide anything, and see your monthly and yearly total.

Get alerts and act

Get reminders before renewals, trial conversions and price increases, and use guided cancellation for anything you no longer want.

How your bank connection would work

Owlpenny would connect to your bank through a trusted financial-data aggregator such as Plaid, the kind of service many U.S. budgeting apps already use. We don't have a partnership with any provider yet; this describes the planned approach.

  • Read-only access. The app can read transactions to find recurring charges. It can't move money, make payments or open accounts.
  • We never see your bank password. You sign in through the aggregator's secure flow, often on your bank's own screen. Owlpenny would only receive a token that allows read-only access.
  • Bank-level encryption. Data encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest (AES-256).
  • Two ways banks connect. Most large U.S. banks offer secure API connections. For banks that don't yet, the aggregator may sign in on your behalf with credentials you give it directly (not us) to read your transactions. The app would tell you which kind each connection is.
  • You're in control. Disconnect an account or delete your data at any time.
  • No selling your data. We don't plan to sell personal or transaction data.
